The Chuvash inherit somewhat mysterious past which reflects itself in the language, traditions and beliefs. Most commonly Chuvash are believed to be descendants of the Huns, Khazarians, Bulgarians, and Suvars, who mingled with local Finno-Ugric populations. An Arab traveler to Volga Bulgaria in X century recorded names of about forty diverse tribes. The Mongolian invasion of the XIII century wiped off the state of Bulgaria, whose people were killed, displaced, separated. The ancestors of the Chuvash were Bulgarians who fled west, where Chuvash language and faith united them into Chuvash nation.
    
    To a westerner Chuvash look exotic - in Chuvash face east seems to meet west. A blue-eyed blond person might have distinct Asian features. Recent genetic studies suggest Caucasian and Middle Eastern origin of the Chuvash.
